Expert speaking faculty at Hospital Efficiency Asia 2011:

Underutilized IT sector a potential growth area to increase hospital efficiency

Despite the many advances that modern medicine has made thanks to technology, there is still room for more growth. Dr. Umapathy Panyala Chief Operating Officer for Apollo Hospitals, explained that the use of information technology is still one of the untapped opportunities for hospitals in this digital age.

“Use of information technology is one of the untapped opportunities that will strengthen the potential of the healthcare sector. This includes lack of seamless integrity between workstations. Also, data migration is associated with technical issues which need to be resolved. Use of lean and six sigma approaches wherever possible also helps improve hospital efficiency,” explained Dr. Panyala.

Dr. Miodrag Todorovic, Chief Quality Clinician for Mauritius’ Apollo Bramwell Hospital shares Dr. Panyala’s view but adds a little more detail.

“Some important areas which are not yet tapped is the massive communication and the use of gadgets such as mobile phones for implementing many administrative hospital procedures, in terms of information exchange or/and data collection, including admission processes, patient family education, billing and payment, and telemedicine at home,” explained Todorovic.
